Preface written by Giulia Harding, italian translation by Saul Gerevini

My contribution to this website aims to demonstrate that there is considerable evidence that Shakespeare and Florio were more than passing friends.  The two became literary collaborators;

Florio the mentor, guide and provider of source material and linguistics, Shakespeare the poet and playwright who seized every source available to him to feed his muse and produce, from so much borrowed material, a product that was entirely new and unique.

This was never a secret, my research shows that it was well known to their contemporaries, but all references to that relationship have merely become buried and forgotten under the dust of 400 years of passing time. Excavating the story has been an exercise in literary archaeology and has produced some surprising findings.

There are also frustrating gaps in this story of course, but one learns about men of the past from both their friends and their enemies.  Florio could be provocative and he certainly made one or two enemies in his life, but he also made many loyal friends and wherever such people wrote of him or to him, the pieces generally slot together to produce a coherent narrative.

In the pages that follow I have made fairly short work of his early life and career as there is little of controversy and Frances Yates gives a definitive version in her biography of John Florio which you may have already encountered if you have found this website.  Internet encyclopaedias all offer the traditional tale of Florio’s life.

Here, however, you will find out what happened in those ‘missing years’ after his sojourn at the French Embassy in London how he persuaded the Earl of Southampton to give Shakespeare financial support and how he went on to become a highly regarded tutor, linguist, trusted personal secretary and literary agent to the great and the good of his day.

That it is likely he edited the First Folio and was so intimately involved in the publication of ‘Shakespeare’s Sonnets’ that he probably wrote most of them himself.  I believe it was all done at the behest of Queen Anne to please James I on his birthday.  More of that later.  Florio’s commitment to Stoic philosophy is also important and a striking influence on Shakespeare’s interpretation of the world around him.

His friends were all instrumental in some way in the construction of the plays and had their part to play.  We will meet such characters as Vincentio Saviolo, “he that looketh like Mars himself”, as Florio described him; a fencing tutor who needed Florio’s help to write a manual on his subject which was clearly used by Shakespeare in the construction of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ and the man who likely coached the Players in the art of the duel to put on a convincing stage performance when Tybalt skewers poor Mercutio.

Such vignettes illuminate our understanding of how Shakespeare worked – and of course that’s what makes this research so worth while.  We need to understand John Florio’s input to see William Shakespeare more clearly and sometimes it allows us to gain a far firmer grasp on how certain dramatic structures were directed at the time and understood by their contemporary audiences.

The Florio factor is crucial, so please read on.   What you embrace as truth or reject as conjecture is entirely up to you, but I can promise you will not leave this website empty-handed.
